Compressed natural gas is in high demand across the country. The lower cost and cleaner properties have made CNG a forerunner among alternative fuels. While fleet vehicles have been some of the first to embrace this technology, consumers are now breaking into the game. At $2.00 per gallon less than gasoline, they see a potential for real savings with CNG.
As the demand for compressed natural gas as a transportation fuel rises, the industry searches for innovative ways to increase fueling infrastructure. One solution, offered through a partnership between Chesapeake Energy and GE, is truly an innovative option. Through Chesapeake Energy’s affiliate Peake Fuel Solutions, the two have produced a fully integrated, CNG fueling supply system known as “CNG In A Box”. The modular unit is hailed as a “Plug and Play”, standardized, CNG compression station. The system is an easy to install, ready to operate, CNG fueling station that plugs directly into any existing gas line.
The “CNG In A Box” system has both fleet and consumer applications. In either setting, Peake Fuel Solutions claims that it can reduce annual fuel costs by as much as 40%. For fleets, savings could reach $1,500 per vehicle per year, plus savings in maintenance costs. CNG burns more efficiently and cleaner that gasoline or diesel, requiring less maintenance. In fact, natural gas vehicles have shown emission reductions of up to 80 percent when compared to gasoline vehicles.
Some key features of the “CNG In A Box” system:
- The gas compression, storage, cooling, drying and controls are easy to ship and maintain.
- The units come in two configurations: an 8 foot x 20 foot container or 8 foot x 40 foot container.
- Its modular and intuitive design makes it “Plug & Play” on-site.
- The offering includes GE Wayne branded dispensers with credit card capability and provision for “Point Of Sale” interface.
- The fuel dispenses at a rate of about 7 gasoline gallon equivalent per minute.
Mike Hosford, general manager—Unconventional Resources, GE Oil & Gas says, “In collaboration with Peake Fuel Solutions, GE is developing infrastructure solutions to accelerate the adoption of natural gas as a transportation fuel. The CNG In A Box system is a unique fueling solution that brings together some of the best innovation from across GE to help fleet owners and everyday drivers realize the benefits of cleaner burning, abundant, more affordable natural gas.”
The company hopes to deploy more than 250 “CNG In A Box” stations across the U.S. by 2015.
